Family Always Comes First.

Good day readers. Its been quite a day, skipped gym because I woke up feeling like my limbs were all falling apart. Its Federal Territory day today, hence the smooth traffic and the entire KL is on holiday. I love movie dates, and not to mention how affordable it is to watch a movie here compared to Melbourne. We’re running out of movies to watch, so Ellie; pace yourself. February is here, and Chinese New Year so far has been great. There’s something different about the celebration this year. Maybe its my perspective, but the long stretch of holidays definitely played a big part. I remember growing up looking forward towards Chinese New Year for the ang pow collection, the good food, the cookies, and definitely the shopping. It seems like being raised in a country where Malaysians celebrate everything together, and people really do embrace cultural differences.

We actually celebrate differences more than we think we do.

And it starts with family. I’m sure as kids sometimes we find it annoying to have to go through all the traditional ceremonies not knowing what its all about and the whole point of it. We look forward to visiting houses for the ang pow and cookies (soft drinks if I may add) instead of meeting the people unless they’re your cousins of course. Truth is, you’ll only truly understand the importance of all the values carried through generations when you’re slightly older. It’s pretty much great family time. I’ll give you a scenario, imagine Chinese New Year without your family, it’d be pointless right?

Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.
Now take a look at the photo below.

I think this photo alone describes Chinese New Year to me. Three generations, my parents, my nephew(the one with the little lion head) and my cousins all laughing together. We may have underestimated the importance of laughter, especially within a family. When you look at your life, the greatest happinesses are family happiness. I chose this photo over the rest partly because it exudes happiness and it was quite a candid shot. Decided to submit this photo for the on going PETRONAS’ Photography Contest with a theme of Reimagining Energy.

Greetings. Chinese New Year is around the corner once again, and its my favorite time of the year. Its the time of the year where families get together to usher the new year with ang pow, mandarin oranges, people dressing up in red and visiting one another. Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions.

What is Chinese New Year?

“According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian (Chinese: 年; pinyin: nián). Nian would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, Nian never came to the village again.”

This Chinese New Year, PETRONAS stays true to the common tradition and values that bind all Malaysians together in the underlying messages of its television commercial (TVC) to usher the year of the Golden Dragon.

shot in Malaysia, England, Belgium, China and India – depicts six separate yet intertwining stories of individuals around the world who, no matter how far they have come in life, stay true to their roots and tradition.
Among others, the stories revolve around a dentist posted to a rural part of India celebrating the New Year with his family in his home country via Skype, a little boy in China having a simple dinner with his family, and a young girl in London working two jobs to earn a living and yet still able to “celebrate” Chinese New Year with her extended family – her customers.
The essence of the TVC lies in the struggle that each individual goes through in life – be it working two jobs, or having to be the head of the family at a young age, as in the case of the little boy in China.
What is of more significance is how each of these individuals adapts to the changing times, turning challenges into opportunities, and always seeing the positive in the negative – powerful universal messages that transcend cultural, generational, creed and ethnicity barriers.
It illustrates what it takes to make life better through a progressive and bold attitude that one holds, opening the mind to new ideas and learn new things, ultimately making one a better human being.

Apart from the TVC, PETRONAS is also organising a photography contest themed Reimagining Energy™, in collaboration with Leica Camera AG. To participate, all that the members of the public have to do is to capture their Chinese New Year moments that best depict the spirit of Reimagining Energy™, submit their photos via PETRONAS’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/petronas1) and stand a chance to win great prizes. Prizes will be awarded to the individuals of the winning photos. These photos will also be displayed and exhibited at Galeri PETRONAS. In addition, PETRONAS will also be conducting photography workshops at selected schools and colleges, to help youths express themselves through photography as well as improve their skills.

My Short Story.

My life was once, different. I had a double life.
I couldn’t cope with both, chose one and came over to Melbourne.
It wasn’t all about architecture, and that was Malaysia.
This makes me miss home, but it was good memories.
It was so hard to just be Ellie, and shake off being MissyCheerio.
It became such a huge part of me, that at some point I felt like I lost my myself.
Time was never enough, but I had so much going on.
I love my friends, but I can’t seem to find the time to keep up with it.
People tend to get it, Ellie is always busy and missing in action.
I never had the time to watch TV.
It was always studies, events, parties, dinner, dates, shopping, family.
There was no me in it, felt like life just went on and I was just cruising through it.
Hey I’m not complaining, it was amazing & I’m glad it happened.
I go to class and people go like, yeah she’s some famous blogger who did this and that.
It was quite tough to cope when you want people to take you seriously when you do architecture.
I was a workaholic, and I work all the time. So the next question was, how does she do it?
Well, it was hard; but I stopped growing up and got stuck in that comfort zone.
It was cool to have people coming up to you to ask for a picture with me.
It was awesome that I get emails from people asking for advice, trusting me that way.
I had my birthday and farewell party sponsored by clubs and restaurants.
I’ve gotten gadgets, traveled and freebies thrown all the time.
I never let it get to my head though, I know that some friends stay in our lives forever.
With that life, my world grew but it grew smaller.
Truth is, I’m only human. When my grandmother died, that was it. I snapped & crashed.
That was the reason why I left Malaysia, to be away from my privileged and one-of-a-kind lifestyle.
I didn’t want all the fame, I wanted to feel and be normal; just like everyone else.
Wake up in the morning,with time to prepare my own meals instead of skipping meals.
To find time to slap on a facial mask and watch Gossip Girl, to have some ‘me’ time.
I needed to grow up and find myself. Here, I found love. I found music. I found hope.

If you knew the kind of life I had, and giving all that up; something bad must have really happened.
I’m glad I walked away and just live a simple life now. That doesn’t mean I’ve lost that side of me.
I’m just happier being on my own, independent and I’m fearless. I fear death around me, obviously.
Anyway, thank you all for reading over the years.
If there’s anything I’m thankful about, this blog is still personal.
It wasn’t easy to keep it personal with all the advertorials going on at some point.
And as it grows, you would feel a little vulnerable to put all your thoughts out there to get gunned down. There was a phase where I used to be angry and slammed quite a bit, but now at this point; I try my best not to.
Its always tempting to misuse the power that you have, but once you’re in control of it; those crappy ideas don’t mean a thing anymore. The world wide web is just a platform of self expression, so express it very wisely.
In time, I think I grew immunity; so respect this space as my home.

This blog has passed 1,000,000 views; that is just an odd feeling to have.
You have no idea how many new friends I’ve made along the way.
Believe me, everything you do; will lead to something new.

Ushering The New Year 2011.

Happy New Year. Massive hangover and I’ve never slept so much in a day for the longest time. It seems like this new year would hopefully mark a new start, a breathe of fresh hair and most importantly to a whole new chapter. I don’t think its possible to list down my new years resolution because I think its all intertwined; so perhaps all thats gonna change is to make this year a happier one. Too many things has happened over the past half a year, and sadly; it seems like I’m too awfully blinded by all my problems that I’ve failed to feel anything whatsoever.

I’m not really sure about my directions when it comes to being in the blogosphere, but one thing thats certain is that 2011 on missycheerio.com would deserve my fullest attention and I intend to be more dedicated in terms of sharing my thoughts & opinions. I’ve held back quite a bit and remained reserved to a certain extent when it comes to spilling details because sometimes sharing can backfire and cause more damage. Enough of heartaches, enough of misery; I think its time to do what I do best, afterall you’re all here to read & you have no idea how great it makes me feel when I know a stranger cares so much about me.

It has never crossed my mind that this platform of self expression would take me to this height, but I strongly feel that you should never lose the essence and identity of what makes you; you.

I’m not that great of a person to be honest, sometimes I think I beat myself down way too much that I get a shock of my life when someone has something nice to say about me. I’ve spent quite a number of years being misunderstood, underestimated and it wasn’t easy to just pick your stand & be firm about it.

Greetings readers. Some crazy thought struck me last night out of no where to start running competitively again thanks to yesterday’s rally with Ryanloopthehoop in court. Mum thinks I’m crazy and she even threw me a statement asking if I’m training to be an athlete wtf. I guess to a certain extent it gets a tad bit addictive playing basketball on a daily basis, and figured since my mornings are pretty free this two weeks; I might as well throw on that good ol’ pair of sneakers and run.

My morning kicked off with a two hour (not much of running yet though), two rounds of circling around the perimeter of my housing area. The perfect weather made it all a million times better, and from the looks of it; I think my mornings will be filled with cross training and basketball in the evenings. Its a little sad though, because my parents still thinks I’m over exerting myself; but hey I feel amazing at the moment.

There are some things in life which we can’t control, and even when you try controlling the final outcome; there will be occasions where you’ll land up some place near devastation. But whatever it is, always remember to keep your chins up!

You see, I’m not always this positive. Once upon a time in this dark hidden corner, there once lived a girl who thinks that she’s done way too many wrongs to even be loved. Maybe its just the way I’ve hot wired my mind, its like having assumptions that you’ll never be loved like the rest. I did learn something really new lately, that when you open up your mind and hearts, you’d realize that there’s this pinch of insecurities which you keep convincing yourself that you’re not worthy of loving.

Turns out, you might have been the rock instead. I’ve been taken by surprise over and over again especially throughout the entire duration when I was hospitalized. Phone calls, text messages (never underestimate the power of Facebook!) and I guess I’m just not used to genuine love and attention from my friends. Its like I’ve never really taken the extra effort or gone the extra mile for everyone, so all this is new for me. If there’s anything that I’ve learned from my horrible experience from dengue; sorry to most suckers, Shi Yin/Ellie/MissyCheerio is genuinely loved.

Here’s a weird theory; I’ve recently discovered this one new side of my life who knows nothing about my blogging/social media circle or let alone MissyCheerio which is so cool to me. Don’t mean to sound narcissistic, but my life has transformed quite a bit and its good to just be loved for the person that you are regardless of who you are or what you own. Its always been a struggle to not over expose myself, and I’m sure you noticed how much I’ve reduced the amount of personal content here. All that is about to change, because I think I’m ready to take on life in a much more personal basis again.

The most commonly misunderstood statement would be bloggers who blogs about their lives are very public about themselves. Bullshit, smart ones uses this as a tool to be selective about what they choose to showcase about; and you’d be surprise how reserved or private some people can be in person. Sometimes I think the most challenging part is to be famous, still being able to be yourself and not altered to feed, and at some point you’ll be cruising on your own with/without the events/parties which is crucial for new bloggers to get noticed & be somebody in the blogging scene.

There will come a point where you’ll have your legion of followers who come by just to read what you have to say; which on my part is the most rewarding part of writing. There’s come a point where you gain your immunity to bitching/nasty comments/insults/hate messages/tweets that you just don’t bother when you get a missile launched right at you. Fame comes with a price,and sometimes you just gotta learn how to rub it off; that this is part of goodies that comes along with it. I’ve been around to see even men these days being more bitchy than ever especially on twitter acting like a whiny puss; and sometimes I think people don’t realize how it paints the wrong picture about themselves to the rest of the world.

Sometimes even when I smell negative tweets flying around & even when its sometimes aimed at me; all I do is either ignore or unfollow. There a couple of bloggers on twitter who’re the usual keyboard warriors sounding like some machine gun annoys the crap out of me. For the best of both worlds, sometimes unfollowing someone on twitter isn’t such a bad idea and there’s no need to feel offended at all. If it avoids any feud,less drama,and they’re very unlikely to send you a direct message wtf.

Its not in my place to say but people really need to stop making such a big fuss out of issues,especially ones where is very much played out to harm the blooming image of Advertlets. I don’t want to sound like I’m being biased, and nope I don’t own any share in the company; but all this tacky moves is getting really low & disgraceful to our healthy blogging environment. There’s no need to blow situations out of proportion all the time because I really think that old tricks are starting to stink; and we all know that more than half the time the situations’ been modified to look ugly wtf.

People are not that stupid to read and buy any story like before; unless you’re a complete idiot. Google search states that MissyCheerio has had breast implants at 6 years old then readers would read them off and buy it? Look, Advertlets may have had its ups and downs; nothing fancy over the top like the very well organized and structured competitors, but I guess in so many ways I value honesty & bonds over black & white can-go-wrong-anything documents. I like how there’s this sense of closeness within the Advertlets community, like how we’re all friends; regardless of blog traffic hits and status. I, for one hate the feeling of being used; or people being nice to me just because..; so its a great environment to be around in.

To me, there’s no point wasting the prime years of my blogging career as MissyCheerio being a puppet or manipulated for the benefit of some other party because I know I am an asset on my own. I’d rather be represented as a part of a happy bubbly circle of friends then to be an okay-so-thats-your-name and thats it. There’s a reason why I’m getting emails from readers, bloggers and sometimes even blogging friends who asked me about joining Advertlets and why I’ve always stuck my ass for them.

First, Josh Lim is a friend and regardless of how much we’ve known about him; I guess I’m lucky that he really took me as a friend (with no hidden intentions wtf) and helped me through quite a rough time last year while I was apart from the Keeper. Some friends you gotta get see through all their colors in order to know the reason why they’re of a certain way. Second, I have a contract with Advertlets, I get paid and it makes my life as a student a whole lot more wonderful. But then again, you should all know that money is never a factor for me. Third, I’ve been with Advertlets for almost two years now; when it was at rock bottom down low shit hole wtf but lets be honest, it looks really good these days. Its always nice to be apart of something, something that grows with you; than to feel like you’re never really anything in that something.

Forth,the infamous Advertlets payment issue; if you happen to know the team who’s working their butt off to make Advertlets move the way it is at the moment; you shouldn’t have much to worry about. What you’ve been reading about, are all old news from like 34823749826348623642 years ago wtf. I’m just gonna try to sound as fair as possible for this money related issue; in any field or business, money will always be a problem at any level. The ones who actually write hate posts about not getting their money wtf are like bloggers whom I’ve never heard of, complaining about figures so small shop at Cotton On also disappear into thin air wtf and has anybody ever tried to make some sense out of how one can get so angry and fueled over RM50? Its just pure unethical to defame others. If you want to be apart of a family, start being like one.

Fifth, I genuinely feel loved. I’m so happy to not be restricted to be around other bloggers who happen to not be within the same advertising network. Pardon my lack of knowledge in policies, but I don’t believe in dividing each other among ourselves. What sort of image are we trying to project as bloggers; its not like we’re at war or something so wtf is with the team Advertlets vs competitor? Whoever that implied the black and white orders, they’re definitely sucking away all the unity in us young earthlings.

Please don’t waste my prime blogging years going through more scrutiny & I don’t like being labeled. I’m happy to be in good hands with Advertlets and figured that you should know that. I love all my blogging friends I’ve made over the years and I’m sure you know who you are and how I am in person. Spread the love, and lets all be merry and happy. Being overly calculative, black-mailing, and feeling like a tool is definitely not my cup of tea. Please feel free to gun me down on comments and feedbacks; if you’ve known me long enough, architects are built to tank bullshits. And sorry, I don’t need any free publicity or traffic boost. Its my credibility on the line. Unless you’re paying me RM6000 to cover for my dengue hospital charges, I doubt any party can afford to make me write this post.

Synopsis

But every cop has his or her day and soon Gamble and Hoitz stumble into a seemingly innocuous case no other detective wants to touch that could turn into New York City’s biggest crime. It’s the opportunity of their lives, but do these guys have the right stuff?
